The Thankful Book by Todd Parr

Thanksgiving is only a week away!

Most likely you’re busy planning for company, traveling, and feasting. For adults this time of year can begin to feel overwhelming. Sometimes you just need to take a break.

Sitting down and reading with your child isn’t just about them. It’s also about giving yourself the freedom to slow down, pick up a book, and share in the wonder and imagination of the season.

Here are just a few of the great Thanksgiving books that appeal to all ages. What are some of your favorite books about the thankful season?

T is for Turkey by Tanya Lee Stone. This is a perfect book for preschoolers and alphabet lovers of all ages. Follow a group of elementary students as they put on a play to celebrate the stories behind Thanksgiving.

1621: A New Look at Thanksgiving by Catherine O’neill Grace. Looking for a way to talk to your children about the historical facts of this holiday? This book forgoes the typical Thanksgiving myths and instead focuses on the stories of the Wampanoag people and the English settlers. According to Amazon’s review of the book, “In the at Autumn of 1621 these two groups met for a period of three days as part of a very complicated political situation. Over this period, there was feasting to celebrate the harvest, and the English and natives may have sat down together to share food. This was not a religious occasion; nor was it entirely harmonious, but it grew to be so perceived in later American consciousness. After the Civil War, English descendants looking back on this event romanticised it and created from it the modern holiday we know today as Thanksgiving.”

Thanksgiving Day by Gail Gibbons. Gibbon’s artwork is a huge hit with all ages and the inviting images of all the traditional Thanksgiving images will draw in early readers and older kids alike.

Thank You, Thanksgiving by David Milgrim. This easy-reader is a great reminder of all the things we can be thankful for. Follow the protagonist as she runds an errand for her mother and ruminates on the warmth of her boots, the clouds in the sky, and the sounds of the musical birds. After all, it’s the daily things that make life so beautiful.

The Thankful Book by Todd Parr There’s so much to be thankful for, and this beautiful book will remind you of the power of gratitude. From the book:

I am thankful for music because it makes me want to dance.
I am thankful for my feet because they help me run and play.
I am thankful for kisses because they make me feel loved.
