Here in Arkansas 1 in 7 babies are born premature.
This coming Saturday, November 17, the March of Dimes is taking part in the World Prematurity Awareness Celebration by hosting an event at Lakewood Village Fountain in North Little Rock. The event will include activities for families and a Lotus flower release to honor the lives of children born too soon.
Organizers for the event explain the Lotus flower as “particularly special because of its ability to lie dormant in times of drought and blossom when ideal conditions return to give it life.” Such a flower, say organizers, “is a symbol of a “strong vital force that can withstand harsh adverse conditions, and as with us, we can find ourselves going through difficult periods in our lives, and our “seed” gets suppressed, but just at the lotus flower, we rise up and bloom in celebration and despite that adversity.”
The March of Dimes is the leading nonprofit organization for pregnancy and baby health and has been helping improve the lives of premature babies and their parents for 75 years, offering both resources and comfort to parents and children in need. With chapters nationwide, the March of Dimes works to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
